82 degrees on Long Island Today

It was 82 degrees at 3:39 p.m. on April 9, 2013, beating the old record of 73 degrees back in 1991, according to the weather service.

The record temperature for the day at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma was shattered by a whopping 9 degrees as the thermometer skyrocketed by as much as 30 degrees above normal for this time of year, the National Weather Service said.

The thermometer topped out at 82 degrees at 3:39 p.m., beating the record of 73 degrees in 1991, according to the weather service. Records have been kept at Islip since 1984.

“You could almost call this early summerlike, at least by Long Island standards,” said meteorologist Joey Picca, noting that the normal high at the end of June is right around 80 degrees.

Picca said conditions were ripe for the warm weather, with the wind coming out of the west to northwest — a favorable direction to bring in warmer temperatures on dry spring days — and the jet stream pushed farther to the north.

Still, don’t get used to it, Picca said.

“We’re going to begin a downward trend,” on Wednesday, with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms in the forecast, and temperatures in the lower- to mid-70s, potentially in the 60s on the East End, Picca said. Temperatures this time of year are typically in the mid-50s, he said.
