Black Ice Warning issued for Suffolk County Long Island on April 1st 2014

April 1, 2014 Long Island- Drivers in Suffolk should be extra cautious during the morning commute because of black ice, the National Weather Service said Tuesday. Black ice happens when the road is cold enough to freeze a thin layer of moisture that may be hard to see with the naked eye.

The service’s Upton office released a special weather statement for most of Suffolk County, warning drivers of refreezing snowmelt “overnight into early Tuesday morning, resulting in patchy black ice.”

The service said slippery surfaces are possible and commuters “early Tuesday morning should proceed with extra caution.”
