North Carolina Department of Transportation and Cintra adding toll lanes to I-77
The North Carolina Department of Transportation announced today that they will move forward with plans of adding toll lanes on I-77.
With increased traffic from Charlotte to Mooresville and vise versa. Delays in I-77 have been an issue for many commuters.
They’re working on a plan to expand the highway for 26 miles, from exit 11 to exit 36 in Mooresville.
Cintra Infraestructures, a transportation company in Spain, is the successful bidder to finance the project. It is part of a public-private partnership.
NCDOT spokesperson Jen Thompson says there will be two additional lanes on either side, which they intend on making toll lanes.
“The general purpose lanes will remain. The lanes that we are going to add will be managed lanes, which basically means you have an option. If you want to get somewhere quicker, more reliable, you have an option to pay a toll to use those lanes that we are going to add. If you want to remain in the general purpose lanes, those will remain free,” Thompson said.
If everything goes according to plan, they’ll sign an agreement with Cintra in June. The estimated cost is 660 million dollars. The project will be completed in 2018.
